Imagine if we were using the same medical techniques today that were used during the Industrial Revolution, including the practice of bloodletting using leeches. Medicine has come a long way since then. So why do organizations and corporations cling to management techniques that are just as obsolete as the bleed-and-leech model? In a global workplace that is more diverse and filled with entirely new challenges, now is the time for organizations to evolve to a more effective style of leadership and project management. A roadmap for leading projects and groups, Moving from Project Management to Project Leadership: A Practical Guide to Leading Groups covers the theory, strategy, and tactics that create high-performing teams and organizations. The first half of the book delineates the theories and practical knowledge required to be an extraordinarily effective leader. It defines what it is, exactly, that you need to do to be the best leader you can be. The second half of the book provides the tools and processes required to put that knowledge into place. The author explores the theory that it’s all about the communication. By paying close attention to organizational clarity and the way messages are transmitted within your organization, you will find new ways of empowering people while increasing efficiency — something the old management style can rarely boast. If project leadership is the main thesis of this book, the power of effective top-down communication is the tune you’ll be humming after putting this book down. Workplace discrimination is an experience that, despite four decades of equality legislation, continues to blight the lives of thousands every year. Discrimination persists on the protected grounds of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief and gender reassignment, as well as where no legal protection exists such as in relation to class background or migration status. The Handbook discusses recent changes in equality legislation as well as considering the limitations of legal frameworks in addressing inequality. However, complying with the law is only the first step towards addressing discrimination in the workplace, and the book goes beyond the law and provides evidence of good practice in promoting organisational culture change, as well as considering future directions for policy on equality action. The Gower Handbook of Discrimination at Work looks at both social justice and business case perspectives, and its message is not a negative one. The contributors have considerable depth of understanding of workplace discrimination, both as academics and equality practitioners, their work has contributed to policy formation and all are committed to improving the lives of people at work. They offer insights into existing international developments and make suggestions for the ways in which positive change can be realised. Practitioners, such as human resources professionals and other managers involved in addressing equality at work, trade unionists, equality trainers, and academics concerned with researching or teaching in the areas of employment and equality will all find this book of interest. Furthermore, it will be of value to students in the fields of business and management, employment law, equality and diversity and human resource management. Tessa Wright and Hazel Conley have succeeded in bringing together a collection of interesting, insightful and innovative contributions to the debate surrounding the regulation, form and effects of discrimination in workplaces. It provides researchers and policy makers with a valuable source of up-to-date information and critical commentary, while acting as an indispensable reference for students taking specialist modules on equality and diversity. The strength of the collection lies in its successful combination of reflective, theory-based chapters, empirically-driven analyses and policy-oriented commentaries. The discussions are all set against the backdrop of UK and European legislation which helps to contextualise the analyses and provides plenty of opportunity for the authors to engage in critical discussion. The debates and issues explored are essential reading for those interested in contemporary developments in equality and diversity, while the issues raised set down some key challenges for policy makers if they are serious about developing anti-discrimination interventions.'

Emphasizing that its much easier and more cost effective to make changes in the planning phases of a project rather than later on in the process, Project Management Tools and Techniques for Success provides an accessible introduction to project management fundamentals. Highlighting approaches for avoiding common pitfalls, it begins with an introduction to project management that compares and contrasts the stages of poor management with those of effective management. Because change is inherent in virtually all projects, the text outlines the human effects of change and suggests ways to mitigate these effects. It addresses team dynamics, sourcing alternatives, motivating the team, managing expectations, assessing risk, and defining and prioritizing project requirements. The book translates difficult concepts into practical applications with a case study that examines the merger of two companies, along with the subsequent development of a new corporate headquarters. By adding a layer of statistical methods and tools to the front-end of a project, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) augments standard Six Sigma processes to help ensure project results meet customers needs and that delays caused by new requirements or rework after implementation are eliminated or reduced. The book explains how to effectively incorporate DFSS tools to reduce the possibility of failure in your next project. Clearly illustrating effective project management practices, the book includes a listing of commonly used acronyms, suggestions for additional reading, along with instructions on how to create four of the most important tools discussed in the book. DESCRIPTION:- Dennis Locks masterly exposition of the principles and practice of project management has been pre-eminent in its field for four decades. It was among the very few early books to treat project management holistically, rather than as a collection of separate techniques. It thus explains the entire project management process in great detail, demonstrating techniques ranging from the simplest of charts to sophisticated computer applications. Everything is reinforced throughout with case examples and diagrams. The text has been completely restructured and largely rewritten for this tenth edition, so that the sequence now follows even more closely the life-cycle of a typical project from its earliest definition to final close-out. Case examples and diagrams have all been reviewed, updated, augmented or replaced. Expansion from 25 to 30 chapters has allowed greater emphasis to be given to stakeholders perceptions of success, the organization and management of business change projects, peoples roles in project management and the wider business contexts in which project management has been adopted. As with previous editions, meticulous care has been taken to ensure that the text style is reader-friendly and free of unnecessary jargon, with clear diagrams and a construction that is logically organized, well indexed and simple to navigate. The result is certain to maintain the books acclaimed status as the standard work for managers and students alike. Project Management is the best British textbook on the subject. Insight into today's economic and financial problems comes, in this revealing book, from an understanding of how and why the practice and the teaching of management has developed as it has. Gordon Pearson, who has spent equal parts of his long career as a practising manager and a management educator, clarifies through rigorous historical review the difficult issues around management with which we struggle today, such as why management custom and practice so often lead to contravention of the law. Pearson reviews how management became a practice and body of understanding, the development of its crucial role in economic progress, and then how its corruption came about as a result of malign theory, leading to the dominance of the bonus payment culture and short term deal-making that plague us today. Understanding management's past, suggests Pearson, will help its improvement for the future. Contributing to that understanding, this challenging book sheds light on how management might be renewed and on the benign role it could play if freed from the restraints of inappropriate economic theory. This book is not just a history or a sociological analysis of management. It gives a broad, practically informed, critical view of the subject that will be welcomed by any reader with a professional or an academic interest in practice, theory, and context. Contents: Acknowledgements Prologue Part 1 The Emergence of Management -Creating the first economic surplus -An economic theory of industry and commerce -Industrialization and management responsibilities -The developing economic and political context. Part 3 The Educated Fall of Management: -Seduction by the new strategic management -Friedman and business-friendly government -Business schools versus management education. Dr. Gordon Pearson worked for a number of large industrial concerns and their overseas subsidiaries as a planning specialist, a specialist in mergers and acquisitions, and as a senior executive with line responsibility for most major management functions. Just like the world financial system, but for different reasons, 21st-century corporations need a new business model for their enterprise supply chains. The old conventions no longer work in this new world of volatile and increasingly unpredictable demand and supply. The enterprise needs to become more connected to its own parts, as well as its partners up and down the chains it participates in. So too, we need to embrace new ways of looking at customers to gain deeper, more insightful impressions of what they are telling us about the way they want to our buy products and services. Finally, these signals need converting into corresponding action, driven by the people in the business, leaders and staff alike, who are aligned to their customers wishes. This is the world of dynamic supply chain alignment where, increasingly, supply chains are the business. In the follow-up to his hugely successful "Strategic Supply Chain Alignment", John Gattornas "Dynamic Supply Chain Alignment", explores how to create and sustain multiple supply chains with a level of flexibility and responsiveness that allow you to respond to opportunities and threats; at the same time aligning your suppliers, your partners and your customers. When more executives get to this stage of development the profits will flow more readily, and sustainability of performance will not be the same issue it is today. The way forward is right there in front of us; but, says John Gattoma, we must throw off old ways and embrace the new. Risk management and contingency planning has really come to the fore since the first edition this book was originally published. Computer failure, fire, fraud, robbery, accident, environmental, damage, new regulations – business is constantly under threat. But how do you determine which are the most important dangers for your business? What can you do to lessen the chances of their happening – and minimize the impact if they do happen? In this comprehensive volume Kit Sadgrove shows how you can identify – and control – the relevant threats and ensure that your company will survive. He begins by asking ‘What is risk?’, ‘How do we assess it?’ and ‘How can it be managed?’ He goes on to examine in detail the key danger areas including finance, product quality, health and safety, security and the environment. With case studies, self-assessment exercises and checklists, each chapter looks systematically at what is involved and enables you to draw up action plans that could, for example, provide a defence in law or reduce your insurance premium. The new edition reflects the changes in the global environment, the new risks that have emerged and the effect of macroeconomic factors on business profitability and success. The author has also included a brand new set of case studies to illustrate his ideas in practice. contents List of Figures List of tables Preface Acknowledgements 1. In this book, we present what we understand to be the value school of corporate governance. We are currently moving beyond the period of a heavy focus on scandals and crises that characteised not exclusively but especially the period between 2001 and 2008. We outline a multitude of areas where and how corporate governance could add real value. We paid particular attention to the necessity of a contingency approach when presenting our model of board types and roles. No “one-size-fits-all” model- such as for example suggesting a participatory approach for all settings or countries – emerges as a solution. The presented insights take idiosyncrasies and dynamics over time into consideration. The include the main issues and their real causes, ownership settings, country settings and new developments in corporate governance research and practice, such as optimizing corporate governance in and with subsidiaries, since the upper echelon hitherto received considerable attention and subsequently saw major improvements in their conduct. Instead of national laws, we rather emphasise typical patterns, dilemmas and solutions. We illustrate our points with in-depth case studies and highlighted learning nuggets. We alert the reader to be sensitive for typical dilemmas, traps and promising avenues forward when value creation is the goal. The adaptations of these insights to your current and future corporate governance settings and challenges will determine success of boards in the future. Contents About the Authors Preface Acknowledgments. Part 1: Introduction. Chapter 1: Corporate governance - beyond the scandals and buzzwords. Chapter 2: International Corporate Governance - similarities across systems. Part 2: Boards' Internal Dynamics. Chapter 3: Information demand and supply for changing Board roles. Chapter 4: Navigating through typical conflict patterns. Chapter 5: Codes of conduct - the value added beyond compliance. Chapter 6: Board evaluation. Part 3: Corporate Governance in Specific Contexts. Chapter 7: Corporate Governance dynamics in M&A. Chapter 8: Corporate Governance in and with subsidiaries. Chapter 9: Corporate Governance in developed versus emerging markets. Chapter 10: Responsibilities in alternative forms of governance. Part 4: Corporate Governance in Special Ownership Situations.
