About the Book
This book is meant for graduate students of Physical Chemistry and is designed in accordance with the latest model UGC syllabus on the subject dividing the course of study in three volumes. Volume I of the series deals with the states of matter namely - gaseous, liquid, solid and colloidal state and includes a chapter on chemical kinetics and catalysis. Unified treatment of the subject and explanation of facts at molecular level has simplified the understanding of the basic concepts of Physical Chemistry.
In preparing the text authors have focused on the concepts and introduced the subject matter incorporating the latest developments in the topics covered. Examples, figures, graphs and solved problems have been included to ignite the interest of the students in the subject.
Every chapter has been presented with basics interspersed with solved examples and adequate number of objective, short answer and subjective questions at the end of the chapter to make the book student friendly. In addition two chapters 'Mathematics for Chemists' and 'Computer for Chemists' have been included to highlight the role played by these in the understanding of the fundamentals and the basic principles of Physical Chemistry and to promote the habit of using computer and Internet among student community.

DESCRIPTION
Physical Chemistry is a textbook for courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It develops the fundamentals of physical chemistry in a logical sequence from the simple to the more complex, from atomic and molecular structures to properties of condensed matter, moving to statistical and thermodynamic properties of systems in equilibrium, and then to transport phenomena and chemical reaction processes. The conceptual structure of physical chemistry is emphasized throughout this discussion.
The three major areas of physical chemistry - molecular structure, equilibrium properties of systems, and kinetics of transformations of systems - mainly their theoretical foundations, quantum mechanics, and chemical kinetics and kinetic theory are presented in lucid and student friendly manner. The author's approach aims towards depth of understanding of fundamentals more than toward breadth of recognition of the multitude of activities that go on under the name of physical chemistry. The authors' intention is to keep the reader's mind on the science while developing the required mathematical applications. Appendices further develop the details of mathematical tools as they are needed.
Designed to provide a clear and incisive treatment of fundamental principles at a level accessible to all students, the key features of this comprehensive text include :
Correctness and depth of sophistication of conceptual arguments are the most important features of the book.
Presents the basic concepts and their ramifications in ways that establish the realms of their validity and logic that leads to them.
Thoroughness of the presentation of concepts is not matched in any other physical chemistry text.

Since the publication of the first edition of Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules, new developments in the field have greatly advanced the study of large molecules. These advancements include the technical improvement of measuring instruments as well as the involvement of new disciplines such as materials science and structural biology.
The second ed. of Physical Chemistry of Macromolecules takes these changes into account while continuing the uniquely integrated approach to polymers and biological macromolecules taken by the original text. It explores fully the principles of macromolecular chemistry, methods for determining molecular weight and configuration of molecules, the structure of macromolecules, and their separations. New and thoroughly revised chapters cover topics including:
• Liquid crystals
• Rubber elasticity
• Fourier series
• Protein molecules
• Nuclear magnetic resonance
• X-ray crystallography
This comprehensive resource feature end of chapter problems and references. In providing and integrated treatment of polymer chemistry and biophysical chemistry, the book reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of this subject. Advanced students and professionals in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and biochemistry will all find physical chemistry of Macromolecules, second Ed. to be a timely, carefully structured presentation of the material.
Siao F.Sun is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at St. John's University in Jamaica, New York.
