DESCRIPTION The first edition of Invertebrate Zoology offered undergraduates studying the biology and evolution of invertebrate animals a new approach to the subject. While the text of this second edition has been revised significantly, the origional format has been maintained and enhanced. The chapters, written by expert authors, provide contemporary accounts of the functional, physiological, and reproductive biology of the invertebrate phyla. The final chapter of the book reviews modern interpretations of the phylogeny of invertebrates, based on cladistic and molecular evidence. The study of invertebrates has advanced rapidly in recent years, and several major changes are highlighted in this new edition. Separate chapters now reflect the recognition that the former 'aschelminths' include two disparate groups of phyla, a protosome group related to annelids nad molluscs, and an ecdysozoan group related to arthropods. All classifications have been updated and the relationships among the phyla have been further clarified. Generously illustrated throughout, and with an emphasis on readability and clear presentation, this book will be a valuable resource for all students of invertebrate zoology as well as for those involved in current advances in the biological sciences. CONTENTS 1. The invertebrate phyla 2. The Porifera 3. The Cnidaria and Ctenophora 4. The Platyhelminthes, Nemertea, Entoprocta and Gnathostomulida 5. The pseudocoelomate protostomes 6. About the Book Modern Biology has its foundations in the study of basic phenomena of life without which the intricacies of life are impossible to understand. Good understanding of basic biology is a prerequisite to develop new technologies, to work with them and use them for our benefits. This book on “Modern Biology” has been compiled, to help the students particularly those with non-medical background opting for courses on bioengineering, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering etc. It encompasses the topics on basics of biology covering origin of life, evolution, cellular organization, classification of living organisms, human biology, genetics, microbiology etc. An attempt has been made to include reasonable information regarding these varied topics to enable the students to get conversant with the basic aspects of life. This will also be a ready reference for both the teachers and the student. Every care has been taken to give correct and up-to-date information. Contents Preface • General Biology • Cell Biology • Introduction to Life Sciences: Botany and Zoology • Major Taxa in Plants • Major Taxa in Animals • Forms and Functions of Systems in Plants • Forms and Functions of Animals • Introduction to Human Biology • Microbiology : History of Microbiology & Classification of Microorganisms • Microbiology II : Diversity of Microorganisms • Basics of Genetics and Evolution • Basic Molecular Biology I : Nucleic Acids • Basic Molecular Biology II : Proteins • Multiple Choice Questions • References • Index. About the Authors Dr. R.C. Sobti M.Sc., Ph.D., is currently the Vice Chancellor at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Before this prestigious appointment, he has been Professor in the Dept. of Biotechnology of Panjab University. He is also the recipient of many national and international awards and recognitions. He is fellow of prestigious National Academy of Medical Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Zoological Association of India and International Union Against Cancer, Geneva. He has published more than 175 papers in the journals of International repute. He has also published 16 books, four of which have been published by the International publishers. He has worked in many laboratories in USA, Germany, England, Netherlands and Japan. His area of interest is molecular biology, cancer biology in particular, environmental biology and biotechnology in general. He has been on the visiting faculty of comprehensive cancer centre for the state of Florida, Miami, USA and has also visited Germani, Japan and UK, a number of times he has delivered a number of prestigious orations. Dr. (Mrs.) Vijay Lakshmi Sharma, first class first in M.Sc. Zoology, obtained her Doctorate degree in the area of cytogenetics. Soon after getting Ph.D., she joined as lecturer in the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Patiala and was promoted as a Reader in the same department. In 1999, she shifted to the Panjab University, Chandigarh, where she had been promoted as professor. Her area of interest is Cell Biology & Cytogenetics in particular. She has published more than 30 papers in the Journals of National and International repute and have contributed two Chapters in the book on “Some Aspects of Structure and Function of Chromosome” published by M/s Kluwers Academic, Netherlands. Dr. (Mrs.) Sharma has published two books on the Modern Area of Life Sciences to cater to the needs of the students particularly from non-medical stream.
