Dr. S. Palani is Dean and Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Sudharsan Engineering College, Pudukkottai. He obtained his B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering in the year 1966 (University of Madras), M.Tech. in Control Systems Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur (1968) and Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering from University of Madras in 1982. Plasmonics is the study of electromagnetic waves that travel along the interface between a metal and dielectric. About the Author
Kushal Shah is a faculty member at IIT Delhi (India) in the Electrical Engineering Department. He did his BTech and PhD from IIT Madras in 2005 and 2009 respectively. In 200910, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. In November 2010, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi, India) as a faculty member in the School of Computational and Integrative Sciences and remained there till May 2012, after which he joined IIT Delhi. This book discusses some of the important modern problems in signal processing. These topics are (1) Group theory and image processing in which the theory of group representations is applied to estimate how an image gets transformed when a noisy version of the transformed image is measured. (2) Quantum signal processing in which design of quantum gates by perturbing physical systems like atoms and oscillators with random forces like electromagnetic fields is discussed. The Heisenberg and Schrodinger equations for quantum systems in noise are also discussed with application to estimating the parameters of the Hamiltonian. Box quantization of fields is also discussed in this chapter. (3) Large deviation theory, in which asymptotic probabilities of rare events are computed using Cramers idea of rate functions. The rate functions of various random variables and processes are computed in this chapter. These rate functions enable us to compute probabilities of events like escape of a dynamical system perturbed by low amplitude noise from a boundary. The GartnerEllis theorem and Varadhans integral lemma are discussed the latter being a useful tool for computing the partition function in statistical mechanics at low temperatures. (4) Nonlinear and random problems in circuit theory are discussed using a perturbation theoretic approach. These are applied to transistor and diode circuits. The stochastic differential equation approach has been emphasized here. We have also considered frequency domain analysis of nonlinear systems. Some problems in hydrodynamics have been discussed like how a galactic patch moving according to the NavierStokes equation emits Doppler shifted radiation. Finally, problems in Einsteins general theory of relativity when the metric is randomly perturbed have been discussed.
These include statistical properties of geodesics in a random metric, statistical properties of electromagnetic radiation in in a random metric, global positioning systems in a gravitational field etc. The last part of the book is based on projects related to the text material conducted by the authors B.E., M.Tech and Ph.D students.

About the Author
The author completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1990. He completed his Ph.D in Signal processing from IIT Delhi in 1994. He was then a postdoctoral visiting fellow at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore from 19931994. He worked as an Assistant Professor in IIT Mumbai from 1994 to 1997 and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at IIT Kanpur from 1997 to 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he worked as an Applications Engineer at ST Microelectronics, Noida. From June 2000 to June 2007 he worked as an Assistant Professor at the NSIT. Since 2007, he has been working as a Professor at the NSIT. His research interests are statistical signal processing applied to problems of electromagnetics, general relativity and quantum mechanical systems and optimal control of Robotic systems. He teaches courses on Signals and systems, electromagnetics, antennas and Transmission lines and waveguides at the UG level and courses on Signal analysis and selected topics in signal processing based on variational principles at the MTech level. About the Author

About the Author
Dr. Sankaran Palani obtained his B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering in the year 1966 from University of Madras, M.Tech. in Control Systems Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur in 1968 and Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering from University of Madras in 1982 with academic excellence. This text presents the fundamentals of circuit analysis in a way suitable for first and second year undergraduate courses in electronic or electrical engineering. It is very much a ‘theme text’ and not a work book. The author is at pains to follow the logical thread of the subject, showing that the development of topics, one from the other, is not ad hoc as it can sometimes appear. A case in point is the application of graph theory to justify the derivation of the Node and Meshequations from the more extensive set of Kirchhoff current and voltage equations. The topology of networks is stressed, again with the aid of graph theory.
The Fourier series is discussed at an early stage in regard to timevarying voltages to pave the way for sinusoidal analysis, and then dealt with in a later chapter. The complex frequency is presented at the earliest opportunity with ‘steady a.c.’ subsequently seen as a special case. The use of Laplace transformation appears as an operational method for the solution of differential equations which govern the behaviour of all physical systems. However, more emphasis is laid on the use of impedances as a means of bypassing the need to solve, or indeed even having to write down, differential equations.
The author discusses the role of network duals in circuit analysis, and clarifies the duality of Thevenin’s and Norton’s equations, and also exploits time/frequency duality of the Fourier transform in his treatment of the convolution of functions in time and frequency.
Worked examples are given throughout the book, together with chapter problems for which the author has provided solutions and guidance.

John Arnold, PhD, has been with the University of New South Wales since 1978, most recently at University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, Australia. He is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering and Deputy Head of the University College. His research interests lie in the fields of video coding, error resilience of compressed digital video, and coding of remotely sensed data, and he is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology.
Michael Frater, PhD, has been with the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, since 1991, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. His research interests include audiovisual communications and communications systems.
Mark Pickering, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering with the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra. His research interests include video and audio coding, data compression, information security, data networks, and errorresilient data transmission.
