About the Book
Mechanical Measurements is a core subject in the Mechanical Engineering curriculum. The course prepares the undergraduate (may skip some advanced topics and analyses) student for understanding and appreciating the practical aspects of Mechanical Engineering. The book will be very useful for post graduate students if they include all the topics covered in the book. On the whole the aim of the book is to present a sound foundation on the basics of measurement science as applied to measurement of quantities that are important to a mechanical engineer. Measurement involves both an art part pertaining to the skills to be developed for performing “good” measurements and a science part that prepares the engineer to innovate new measurement techniques. The role of the text is to prepare the engineering student to do both.
The book contains sixteen chapters and is divided in to five modules.
The first module contains Chapters 1  3 that deals with measurement errors and statistical analysis of data, regression analysis and design of experiments.
The second module comprises of Chapters 4  6 that deals with the measurement of very important quantities that are central to thermal measurements viz. temperature, systematic errors in temperature measurements and heat flux.
The third module comprises of Chapters 7 – 10 and deals with the measurement of Pressure, Velocity, Volume flow rate and Bulk mean temperature.
The fourth module comprises of Chapters 11 – 14 and deals with the measurement of Thermophysical properties, Radiation properties of surfaces, Gas concentration, Force/Acceleration, torque and power.
The fifth module consists of Chapters 15 and 16. This module deals with computer assisted data acquisition  data manipulation and Examples from laboratory practice.

About the Author
The author is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He has been teaching a course in “Measurements in Thermal Engineering” for the past 32 years to B.Tech., M.Tech. students and research scholars pursuing M.S. and PhD degrees. He has developed a web based course and a video lecture series on “Mechanical Measurements” under the NPTEL project of IIT Madras. The first edition of the present book was copublished by Ane Books and CRC Press in 2008. It has been reprinted many times since then. Present book is a revised second edition of the same book. The present book is an enlarged version of the web course and also a modified and augmented version – Second Edition  of the earlier book. Major additions/modifications are in the treatment of errors in measurement, temperature measurement, measurement of thermophysical properties, data manipulation. Many new worked examples have been introduced in the second edition. As far as possible errors in the earlier book have all been corrected. Paragraphs have been rewritten where clarity was lacking. I acknowledge the help of my students and other readers who have brought to my notice typographical and other errors in the first edition of the book.
All the illustrations have been redone to make them more uniform in appearance and to improve the quality. All plots have been redone using QtiPlot to make them more crisp and to display uniform quality even when many curves are present in each plot.
The author has earlier published a text book “Heat Transfer” through Ane Books. He has more recently published a text book on “Computational Methods in Engineering” through Ane Books as well as Academic Press, with Prasanna Swaminathan as a coauthor.

The understanding of semiconductor materials requires different approach other than metals and is discussed in ChapterIV. The electrons in solid crystalline materials are under the influence of a periodic electric field produced by regularly placed ions at their lattice sites of the crystal.
The popularity of photosensors arises due to their compactness, low cost, simple operational procedures, high sensitivity, high response speed, minimum noise and outstanding reliability besides other advantages. These are discussed in ChapterV.
The control of microstructure for obtaining the desired magnetic properties is today almost as important as the control necessary for achieving their optimum mechanical properties. The magnetic materials make considerable change in magnetic field by magnetization and they are described in ChapterVI.
Superconductors are presently materials of high interest. In ChapterVII, the zero resistivity along with perfect diamagnetic property of them are discussed in details.

About the Authors :
After qualifying among the toppers in Physics in NET, 1989, Prabir Kanti Basu received his Ph.D degree from BITS, Pilani, in the field of solid State Optoelectronic devices while working at National Physical laboratory, New Delhi. Thereafter he joined in semiconductor fabrication industry in 1995 and received training at Germany. There he was involved in process optimization of zener diodes, power diodes, switching diodes, power transistors and solar cells. Since 2003 he is teaching at LIMAT, (Presently Lingaya’s University), Faridabad. In between he has also worked as Research Professor at South Korean University on project of advanced solar cell research. He has published several research papers in reputed international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, Semiconductor Science and Technology, Renewable Energy, Materials Science letters, Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, etc., and presented several papers in International Conferences. Besides academics, he is actively involved in working with industry. Since 2006 he is working with Udhaya Energy Photovoltaics, Pvt. Ltd. Coimbatore as visiting consultant.
After completing M.Sc with specializations in Electronics and Nuclear Physics Hrishikesh Dhasmana qualified NET and GATE, 1999, in Physics, and received his M.Tech degree from IIT, Bombay in Materials Science and Engineering. He has already published papers in the journal of Frontier in Material Science and Technology, Renewable Energy, etc. After his M.Tech he is actively involved in teaching in various engineering colleges. Since 2004 he is teaching at Lingaya’s, Faridabad. His areas of interest are solid state materials, thin film and semiconductor devices. Currently he is pursuing PhD from IIT Delhi in photovoltaic devices in Center for Energy Studies.

The physical systems that are modeled using nonlinear ordinary differential equations are those arising in classical mechanics, namely the Newtonian laws of motion. The systems involving the use of partial differential equations are those arising in electrodynamics, fluid dynamics quantum mechanics and general relativity. The systems involving the use of stochastic differential equations are primarily mechanical systems perturbed by noise. Numerical techniques developed for the solution of nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations lead to difference equations.

About the Authors :
Prof. K. Bhaskar has been with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras since 1992. As part of the Structures Group, he teaches courses related to Solid Mechanics and Elasticity. He has published more than fortyfive papers, primarily related to theoretical modeling of thick laminated structures, in several national and international journals.
Prof. T. K. Varadan was with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras for about thirtyfive years before retiring in 2001. Besides teaching a wide variety of courses related to Structural Mechanics and Design, he has made significant research contributions in the areas of Nonlinear Vibrations and Composite Structures, with more than one hundred refereed publications.

About the author
An IIT Kanpur graduate, Dr. Harish Parthasarathy completed his research at IIT Delhi in the field of Design of Algorithm for Nonlinear Spectral Analysis of Signals. Thereafter the author worked as a postdoctoral visiting fellow at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore.

About theAuthor
Prof. Vallam Sundar, joined as a faculty at I IT, Madras in 1981 is presently Professor at the department of Ocean Engineering since 1996. He obtained M.Tech and Ph.D degrees from the same institution. He has been rated as an excellent teacher in IIT Madras. Prof. Sundar has guided 19 Ph.D students and has about 450 publications in conferences and journals to his credit. A few of his publications have won the best paper award at the International conferences. He has participated in over 100 conferences worldwide and has chaired a number technical sessions. He is on the editorial board for 10 International journals. He was invited by several German agencies as a visiting Scientist and Professor from 1992 to 2006. Recognizing his contributions to teaching and research in Coastal Engineering, he was bestowed the prestigious Honorary Doctorate by University of Wuppertal, Germany. He was elected Chairman of its Asia Pacific division in 2006 by The International Association for HydroEnvironment Engineering and Research, IAHR. One of the most significant contribution of Prof. Sundar, amongst coastal/Ocean engineering related problems, is his solution to the continuous coastal erosion along the North of Chennai harbor. The adoption of groin field not only solved the problem but has also enhanced the formation of beach. Similarly, the coastal protection measures suggested by him and implemented along the west coast of Tamil Nadu have proved to be excellent buffers in reducing the impact of tsunami 2004. He has also been instrumental in the development of fishing harbours along Indian coast.

About the Author: The author completed his B.Tech in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1990, and his Ph.D in signal processing from IIT Delhi in 1994 . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore from 1993 to 1994 where he was involved in galactic simulation . He has worked in IIT Mumbai, IIT Kanpur and NSIT Delhi as an Assistant Professor teaching undergraduate courses on Signals and Systems, adaptive filters and statistical signal processing, electromagnetics and group representation based image processing. Since 2007, he has been a professor at the ECE division at NSIT teaching courses on signal analysis, electromagnetics, antennas and transmission lines and waveguides. His other research interests include quantum computation and quantum gate design. He has published over fifty research papers in international journals and conferences and ten books on a variety of topics related to mathematical physics and signal processing. He has also supervised eight Ph.D students.

About the Authors
Dr. Sankaran Palani is the Director, Sudharsan Engineering College, Pudukkottai. He obtained B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering in the year 1966 (University of Madras), M.Tech. in Control Systems Engineering from I IT, Kharagpur (1968) and Ph.D. in Control Systems Engineering from University of Madras in 1982. About the Author :
K. Venkataraman is a Mechanical Engineer by training. He did his graduation from College of Engineering, Guindy (presently Anna University) and postgraduation from Concordia University, Canada. He did his graduate apprenticeship in Durgapur Steel Plant of SAIL in the year 1971–72 and later worked with renowned engineering consultancy organisation, MECON for nearly 30 years. He was associated with steel, oil, defense and general industries. He got separated from MECON in October 2000 under the voluntary retirement scheme and joined as a faculty member in Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai and later on moved into the Mechanical Engineering department of Anna University. From the year 2005, he was a faculty of BITS Pilani, Chennai centre and was involved in the offcampus activities until 2014. His wide experience extends from industry to academia. About the Author :
Kedar Khare graduated from the Integrated M.Sc. program in Physics at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with highest honours in 1999 and went on to complete Ph.D. in Optics from Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, USA in 2004.
