It reflects on the latest developments in the field and includes new chapters on geomorphic materials and processes, hillslopes and changing landscapes. Fundamentals of Geomorphology is an engaging and comprehensive introduction. Starting with a consideration of the nature of geomorphology and the geomorphic system, geomorphic materials and processes, and the quest of process and historical geomorphologists, it moves on to discuss: structure: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the endogenic agencies of tectonic and volcanic processes, geological structures and rock types. Process and form: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the exogenic agencies of weathering, running water, flowing ice and meltwater, ground ice and frost, the wind and the sea. History: earth surface history, giving a discussion of Quaternary landforms and ancient landforms, including the origin of old plains, relict, exhumed, and stagnant landscape features and evolutionary aspects of landscape change. Fundamentals of Geomorphology provides a stimulating and innovative perspective on the key topics and debates within the field of geomorphology. Written in an accessible and lively manner, it includes guides to further reading, chapter summaries and an extensive glossary of key terms. The book is also illustrated throughout with over 200 informative diagrams and attractive photographs, including a colour plate section. Contents:- Part 1: Introducing Landforms and Landscapes 1. About the Book: This book is a humble attempt to provide a birds eye view of Geo-environment of Gujarat. It also provides information about environmental geology and its significance, required for co-ordination between environmental geologists and planners, designers, executers and engineers; as that can help avoid a mismatch between geomorphology and land use, so as to achieve safe environment and sustainable development for the people. The book covers summarized case studies divided into three parts, covering various aspects of geo-environment. The first part reflects a broad but crisp account of geo-environment of Gujarat; whereas the second covers limited case studies regarding district appraisal, dealing with preparation of various thematic maps including hazard and land suitability—capability map, that helps build cities with safe environment and free from vagaries of nature or negative anthropogenic activity. Third section deals with site specific or problem specific concerns, particularly of some case studies of lignite mining, its hazards, possible mitigation measures along with some socio-cultural and socio-economic aspects of the area This section also deals with the problem of earthquakes in Gujarat in general and 26th Jan.2001 Bhuj earthquake in particular. Contents: Preface, Part—I, 1. Introduction 2. Natural Resources 3. Groundwater 4. Mining & Other Pollutions 5. Earthquakes & Neotectonics 6. Dinosaurs Part—II: District Appraisal 7. Mehsana District 8. Ahmedabad District 9. Jamnagar District Part—Ill: Site Specific/Problem Specific 10. Lignite Mining in Rajpardi-Nani Naroli Mines in Bharuch & Surat Districts 11. Lignite-Mining in Panandro-Matanomad area Kachchh District 12. Natural Hazard — Bhuj Earthquake, References, International Stratigraphic Chart, Geo Environment Scheme, EIA Scheme.
