DESCRIPTION Solid Mechanics has been written for use by undergraduate students of mechanical engineering and related disciplines. Adapted from Hulse and Cain's Structural Mechanics it uses the same distinctive programmed learning format which has been perfected over the course of that book's twelve year history. The text adopts a student-centred learning approach such that students can work at their own pace and assess their own progress through the use of carefully constructed questions and graded practical problems. CONTENTS Preface How to Use This Book Revision of the Fundamentals of Statics Loading of Components Shearing Forces and Bending Moments Stress Analysis (Direct Stress) Bending Stress Shear Stress Torsional Stress Stress Transformation and Mohr's Circle of Stress Strain Transformation and Mohr's Circle of Strain Beam Deflections Strain Energy Elastic Buckling of Axially Loaded Compression Members Stresses in Cylinders Failure of Components Appendix Index. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES RAY HULSE is Associate Dean of the School of Science and the Environment at Coventry University. A Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and an experienced teacher and writer, he has co-authored several other textbooks, including Structural Mechanics, Second Edition (Palgrave, 2000) with Jack Cain and Reinforced Concrete Design, Fifth Edition (Macmillan Press, 1999) with W.H.Mosley and J.H.Bungey. KEITH SHERWIN was formerly Course Tutor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Huddersfield. He has also taught in Egypt and Singapore and is the author of several textbooks, including Foundations of Mechanical Engineering (Nelson Thornes, 1996). JACK CAIN was formerly Senior Course Tutor in the department of Civil Engineering at Coventry University. He has many years of industrial and teaching experience and is the co-author of Structural Mechanics, Second Edition (Palgrave, 2000).
